What is Supermarket?

Supermarket – Stockholm Independent Art Fair is an international artist-run art fair that provides a showcase of artists’ initiatives from all over the world. Supermarket's aim is to display unique projects and ideas, create opportunities for new networks on Swedish and international art scene, and share the passion and vitality that are present in the independent the art world.

Supermarket has been arranged in Stockholm since 2007 by a small group of organisers most of whom are artists themselves. It is a development of Minimarket, which was held at Konstnärshuset ('the artists' house') in 2006 in reaction to a new commercial art fair Market. The project has rapidly evolved from a modest group of local initiatives to an international art fair that has made its mark and helped firmly establish Stockholm on the art world map. Over the years it has featured exhibitors from more than 60 countries, all part of a growing international trend of artist-run galleries, project spaces, artist collectives and other artists' initiatives

Supermarket is not just a regular art fair. In parallel to the main exhibition we have the Supermarket Talks & Performance programme, Supermarket Meetings, Supermarket Forum and our internationally distributed Supermarket Art Magazine.

Who can apply?

Any artist-run galleries that regularly stage public exhibitions in their own exhibition spaces and other artists' initiatives that arrange exhibitions, projects or events with invited artists can apply to exhibit at Supermarket. Individual artists or artists' groups founded only for applying to Supermarket will not be accepted. Each year we exhibit artist-run initiatives from more than twenty-five countries around the world.

Is it possible to choose from different sizes of exhibition booths?

Yes, there are three options that you can choose from:

Large exhibition stand (approx. 12–13 sqm, for example 2x6 m or 2.5x5 m)

Small exhibition stand (approx. 6 sqm, for example 2x3 m)

Presentation stand (approx 2 sqm, for example 1x2 m)

You will be able to find the prices for the stands during the application process on our website. (See below 'How do I apply?)

How do I apply?

You apply online right here on our website. The application is done in four steps:

  • Sign up for a user account on our website and sign in. If you already have an account, then you only sign in.
  • Fill in the applications details; information about your space/initiative and information about your planned exhibition at Supermarket 2024.
  • Do not forget to enclose additional attachments, e.g. images, videos or other relevant information, since this allows us to make a better selection.
  • Submit your application.

Due to the high number of applications, we ask applicants to be as specific as possible when describing your space/initiative and exhibition proposal.

How does the selection process work?

After the application deadline Supermarket's project team gathers all the applications and materials and the selection process begins. The assessement period takes several weeks where we go through every application, check that you filled in all the compulsory information, go through your additional materials (images, links, project proposal etc.) and then individually comment on each application. After this there is a group assessement where we make the selection of usually about fifty to seventy galleries.

If you need a preliminary letter of invitation to support your funding application prior to the official announcement of the selected galleries, please contact us as this is possible.

As an exhibitor you need to arrive several days in advance to be able to set up your booth and have it ready for the first day of the art fair. Generally we advise the exhibitors to arrive on the Sunday or Monday preceding the opening dates.

I am not part of an artist-run space. Can I apply as an individual?

As an individual you cannot apply as exhibitor but instead you can apply to the Meetings Expanded programme. As a participant in this programme you do not exhibit but take part in a special programme of talks, seminars and guided tours. You get invited to the Meetings programme, Exhibitor gatherings, Exhibitor party, Supermarket Forum and have access to the VIP Exhibitor lounge. An organisation can apply for 1–3 persons to participate in the programme. The possibility for two people to share one place can be given by prior arrangement.
