Kyojima Station
Tokyo, Japan
Kyojima Station is not a train stop but a name re‑appropriated by artist Guy Hirose, who altered the sign on the building housing his base in downtown Tokyo. Named after an old house he rented, it became a landmark following an art festival in a disappearing traditional wooden townscape. Re‑evaluating vibrant streets during Japan’s economic boom and Corona’s upheaval, local artists established a base to envision a society beyond the present and transform everyday reality into art.
At SUPERMARKET 2025, Kyojima Station presents ‘Super public bath’, which examines Japan’s public bathhouses – enduring downtown fixtures since ancient times that are far more than mere baths, serving as vital communal spaces where people gather. Our work is not about art but about sharing everyday life, as it transcends conventional art‑making by serving as a dynamic conduit for the collective expression of our daily experiences.
