Small Projects began as a nomadic artist initiative in Manila in 2001 involving a small multicultural community of visual artists, political activists, poets, writers, musicians, filmmakers and performance artists, mostly connected to the University of the Philippines. It manifested in many different forms, always making itself relevant to the community surrounding it. From art exhibitions, concerts, performance art to community work such as workshops with street children and fundraising for communities in need of assistance. Now based in Tromsø, Norway SP has hosted and organized exhibitions workshops, lectures and performances locally and internationally. Small Projects promote works and initiatives which challenge boundaries and promote critical discussion, and provide space for emerging and mid-career artists. Small Projects also promote locally based artists abroad, and to date, we have exhibited or presented the works of Tromsø based artists in Stockholm during the Supermarket Art Fair, Silverlens Gallery in Singapore, several art spaces and conferences in Manila, Senegal, Fredrikstad, Berlin and Liverpool. Small Projects organize exhibitions, workshops and events which deal with relevant issues such as the environment, the food crisis, border politics, gender issues, the rights of indigenous cultures and human rights in general. Small Projects also collaborate with other artist -run initiatives as well as established institutions and promote artist and knowledge exchange. Small Projects is supported by the Norwegian Arts Council, the County of Troms and the City of Tromsø. Several of its projects has been supported by the Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA), and the Norwegian Embassy.
