Jip de Beer:WEB SPACES - (RE)DISCOVER STOCKHOLM
Digitalisation is one of Sweden's strong points. According to research from the European Commission*, Sweden ranks the highest in the use of internet by citizens compared to other countries. Therefore, the people of Sweden are familiar with web pages. New media artist Jip de Beer approaches them in another way. He sees the architecture of web pages as three dimensional buildings.
We are used to viewing web pages from above. With WEB SPACES the artist transforms the underlying architecture of web pages into 3-dimensional spaces. Although we visit these virtual spaces on a daily basis, we never realise that a web page is built by stacking virtual blocks (like images, links and input fields) on top of each other.
(RE)DISCOVER STOCKHOLM is a site specific interactive installation that allows the visitor to explore the virtual world of web pages in the surroundings of Supermarket Art Fair. The web pages of 9000 local businesses (e.g.SecMaker, Bröderna Nordquist Byggmaterial AB and Gröna Lund) are transformed into WEB SPACES. Hereby, a parallel city emerges. The installation, accompanied by a 3D-printed artwork WEBBING STOCKHOLM, captures the WEB SPACES within 36km².
Jip de Beer (1992)operates on the intersection of art and computer science. He’s fascinated by automation and attempts to optimize his artistic work(flow)with programming. His work usually involves a Web Browser and tends to be generative, interactive and strongly visual.
