There is something carnal in Óscar Ratto's painting, even though skin is absent. The compulsive brushwork, the coagulated forms, the leaden or saturated backgrounds, the same dramatic devices reshape the tactile qualities of his craft and, above all, lend a theatrical emphasis – perhaps desperate? Paradoxically, Ratto's painting remains deliberate, even though it connects to the bold plasticity of the whole composition. Anatomy is synthesised into an almost always elliptical line, which does not diminish the fierce emotional impact of the image.
Passion is a risk. In his paintings, both past and present, it is confirmed that Óscar Ratto's overflowing taste, attachment, or need for painting allows him to be heretical.
