Nieuwe Vide
Haarlem, Netherlands
Nieuwe Vide consists of an exhibition space, artists' studios and a project space. There are 25 studios, where artists and creatives work. We collaborate with these artists and creatives whenever possible. Through our exhibitions we combine young and upcoming artists with more established names. For young artists this is a good way to expand their network. We provide young artists with a space to experiment, which gives them tools to professionalise their practice and helps launch their career. Our programme of exhibitions, workshops and talks addresses a diverse range of topics, but is mainly inspired by elements from popular culture, new media and politics. True to our squatters roots twenty-five years ago we are socially engaged. We operate on a community level and offer a diverse programme of educational and social activities, such as a weekly lunch with artists and local residents and a professional art training course for teenagers.
Nieuwe Vide was founded in 1994 as an artist run space. Nieuwe Vide has it's own exhibition space (contemporary art), about 25 artist studio's and a small shop, in which we sell all kinds of nice, small art works for small prices. Nieuwe Vide is especially interested in popular culture, and specifically in crossovers with other disciplines (gaming, theater, literature, film, comics). We are very socially engaged as well.
In 2016 Nieuwe Vide will do a year program about counter culture. We are looking into what counter culture can mean in times like these, but also what historical figures of counter culture still mean. In 2016 we started with a project about writer Thomas Pynchon (In Search of Thomas Pynchon, 16th of January - 8thof March 2016). At the end of 2016 we will do a project about playwright Bertolt Brecht (The Threepenny Opera.A collaboration with art academy KABK in The Hague, Holland) in which art students will research opera and Bertolt Brecht for 6 weeks, and after that will make an opera.
Toon Fibbe, whose work we present at Supermarket, will be one of the teachers in this project.
At Supermarket, Toon Fibbe a.o. will present a new version of his work 'The Birth of all flesh", in which a character tries to interpret the patterns in what seems to be an abstract expressionist painting as a market chart...
Fibbe is interested in how art does relate to the financial market, and so to the current financial and economical situation.
