Kunsthuis SYB is an Artist Residency based in Beetsterzwaag, in the northern part of The Netherlands. SYB offers space, stimulus and support to artists so that they can develop themselves through means of research, experimentation and new collaborations. Artists are invited on the basis of a project proposal to stay in the house for several weeks, to work and present their work in the shelter of the Frisian rural village Beetsterzwaag. SYB invites artists to respond to an annual open call and offers two kinds of residencies: -Residencies for visual artists, curators and artist initiatives living or working in the Netherlands -Summer residencies for foreign visual artists and initiatives Artists are not obliged to produce a fixed artwork but are encouraged to converse with professionals and scientists from different fields to broaden their network do research and to share their work process. Every resident is guided by a member of SYB´s programming committee. SYB´s programming committee consists of artists, curators and art historians. SYB also works with a group of young art critics and writers who write a text or review about each residency project.

SYB’s mission

Kunsthuis SYB wants to offer contemporary artists a workspace on the sidelines of the (art) world. During a project period in Kunsthuis SYB, artists can develop by means of research, experiment and new cooperation. Kunsthuis SYB offers space, stimulation and support.

SYB’s method of working

SYB is an Artist Residency that encourages and provides research, experiment and new cooperation. Artists are invited on the basis of a project proposal to work and stay in the house for six weeks. Every weekend the doors are open for audience, who can follow the work process. This work process is closed by a presentation. A project budget and payment of expenses is available for every project.

Bringing in a project proposal

Artists can bring in a project proposal in which the research, the aim, the method and the desired cooperation are defined. This project proposal needs to be accompanied by current documentation, a curriculum vitae and a work description. As soon as this information is online, a reference to a website will be sufficient. One can choose to initially send documentation only. Once every month, the programming committee discusses the documentation and the project proposals that are sent in.
