Billytown
The Hague, Netherlands
Billytown is an artist-run initiative founded in 2003. It serves as a platform for meeting, exchanging ideas, experimenting, discussing, and developing artistic practices. Located in the centre of The Hague, Billytown currently hosts 23 studios and three guest studios, alongside a gallery, a bookshop, a residency programme and The Archives / Peter van Beveren Library. Since its founding, more than 50 artists with national and international careers have been part of the initiative. The studios provide a dynamic environment that offers opportunities to both emerging and established artists. The guest studios foster a vibrant international exchange, inviting artists, curators, researchers and musicians for short-term residencies. The initiative recognises the essential role that studio spaces play in supporting The Hague’s thriving cultural sector.
At SUPERMARKET 2026, Billytown presents ‘Animal Farm x Billytown’, a book launch accompanied by a mural presentation and artworks from the publication. Using George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’ as a conceptual framework, the project examines the internal dynamics of an artist-run initiative, emphasising self-organisation, collective effort, and shared ideals within a wider cultural setting.
