AOA has been exhibiting art of all disciplines in a window gallery on a busy Chicago street since 2003. The goal is to make contemporary art available and accessible to all. Exhibits change monthly, and the gallery has featured local, national and international artists. The space is especially suited to installation and performance. Exchanges and residencies are encouraged.
ART ON ARMITAGE is a window gallery dedicated to exhibitions, installations and performance work in a large window box in a busy working class neighborhood in Chicago. Hosting 12 exhibitions a year since 2004, the venue shows both emerging and established artists from local to national and international. Visible 24 hours a day, AOA seeks to demystify contemporary art, taking it out of the commercial gallery and making it part of everyday life, accessible to everyone. An artist statement is an integral part of each exhibit, and allows viewers entry into the artist’s ideas and process.
The gallery takes no commission and charges no fees, and maintains a website documenting the exhibitions. Work is chosen which will engage people visually, conceptually and politically, and the neighborhood respond very positively to the work.
